Arthur Wint: THE EARLY YEARS

  • Born in Plowden, Manchester, Jamaica on May 25, 1920

  • Parents: Rev. John Wint, a Presbyterian Minister and Hilda Wint, a school teacher.

  • He was the second of five children: Mavis, Arthur, Lloyd, Douglas, Kathleen

  • Elementary schools at Mt. Zion, Galina and Port Maria

  • Attended Calabar High School for Boys 1930-1936 (10-16 years old). He began his running career there.

  • He was Class 3 Champion (under 13 ) in 1932 & 1933

  • Attended Excelsior College 1936-1938 (16 - 19 years). Did some teaching and helped organize athletics and other sports.

  • 1937 - Jamaica Champion Boy Athlete

  • 1938 he attended the Central American Games in Panama. Gained Gold Medal in the 800 metres and broke a record. He also won a Bronze medal in the 400 metre hurdles.
